Moving for a project is easier when the paperwork is done in the right order. Most countries need a local ID or tax number before you can be paid properly, and many other steps depend on it.
Before you travel
Confirm your right to work and any permit is approved
Get copies of your passport, qualifications and tickets
Agree start date, accommodation and travel with your employer
Check your driving licence is valid in the new country
In your first week
Apply for your local ID or tax number
Register your address if the country requires it
Open a local bank account for your salary
In your first month
Register for healthcare and check any employer cover
Find longer-term accommodation if yours is temporary
If your family is joining you, look into schools and registration for them too
Each of our country guides lists the local ID you need and links to the official source for right-to-work rules.
